How many gas accounts have u got?

Options
I move in a small studio a few months ago. I planned to solve all registration stuff with my gas and electricity suppliers quickly. I asked my landlord about that but he just open his eyes widely and said that he back with the details later (he never did !)

A few weeks passed by and I received a bill from British Gas addressed to provious tenant. When he came to collect it he confirm that I have gas account with them. I also ask about the electricity and he said I need to contact Scottish Power. I set up my gas account with British Gas then. But when I called Scottish Power , what a surprise !!! they said they are not supplying my property in electricity only gas ! I thought it must be a mistake and I call TRANSCO immediately to find out what is going on! It appeared that I have 2 gas accounts and no electricity account at all. Can anyone say is possible? What should I do now?

In a meantime I find out that the last tenant didin’t pay his last bill to Scottish Power – I assume he had enough and stop paying gas bills instead his neighbours ( the property is devided into 4 separate flats, there are only 4 gas meters, so no toher option left).

Now the bailiffs are chasing me for unpaid gas bill, for the gas I didin’t used ! What is your advice?

First of all scout round to see how many gas meters you have in your property. If you have two, then thats why you have more than one account (often happens in properties which have been converted). If not, take the serial number off your gas meter and call transco back, they will give you an MPR number and tell you who is the supplier for that meter.

With regards to electricity, did you ask Transco? because they woulsn't know. Take the serial number of your electricity meter and call your local distributer (in the Yellow Pages or maybe on your meter) and they can give you an MPAN number and tell you who the supplier is.

With regards to the baliffs, send them a copy of your tenancy agreement and a covering letter, and they should stop chasing you.
  • As I mentioned before the property is devided into 4 flats and the are 4 separate meters outside the house. I can only assume ( because no contact with other tenants -never home) every flat has its own meter.
To be sure I run a test and check which meter (the one registered with BG or the one registered with Scottish Power) is working when I switch cooker/central heating on. Result: BG

About the electricity - I called mpas - they answer: British Gas. However BG denied. (call them both 1000 times to confirm this) :((((

Pain in the !!! as it is, you need to ring BG back and tell them transco have confirmed them as site owner, and that the BG meter is the one that is moving, therefore you are using BG gas. Give them your meter details (from the front of the meter). Make sure you get some firm agreed action from them, even if it is just them calling you back (why should you keep calling at your expense?)

You also need to advise Scot Power that you appear to have TWO gas suppliers and that their meter is not registering any gas used, and that BG is the supplier you will pay. Give them your meter details too.

Both BG and SP will need to verify with Transco the site (ie your supply) ownership.

Sadly this happens often with flats (and often with meters mislabelled).
It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.

Please do not buy animals from a pet store. Visit your local sanctuary or centre and give a good home to an unloved or abandoned animal.

Smartie, how do you know nothing is being used on the other meter? If it's supplying another flat it almost certainly is being used, just not by koszalek. Secondly British Gas aren't disputing they supply the other gas meter so no issue there. Just call up and register, there won't be any problems. Any bills from Scottish Power I would just return to them.

With the electricity, just call BG back now with your MPAN (which they should have given you when you asked who your supplier was), advise them you have confirmed they are the suplier with the local distributor and they can then arrange an account to be set up for you.
