SO is this likely to have anything to do with the Cisco VPN client installed ( but not in use)?

The network moniter seems to show data for two interfaces
    Realtek PCIe FE family controller
Realtek PCIe FE family controller - Deterministic network enhancer miniport

Googling the later seems to suggest it has something to do with Cisco, when I select either individually the data rate is about right, where as if I have them both selected the data recieved becomes huge.

I'm not really sure what the Deterministic Network Enhancer Miniport does, I feel a bit out of my depth, anyone care to explain.

Not more than I have done already - you are going to have to investigate this yourself.

I suggest you turn off all devices except your router and your PC, and watch the NetWorx window. Are you still getting huge amounts of data transfer? If yes, then maybe someone external is using your connection! If not, turn on the other devices/laptops one by one, and keep watching. You should see an increased amount of data traffic at some point.

If that doesn't solve the problem, then stop worrying! If you aren't downloading/uploading vast quantities of data from your ISP, then it has to be local...

I was hoping someone could explain, what the deterministic network enhancer was doing, and why, if it is more than a glitch, monitoring both at once results in it measuring huge data transfer levels.

As I have already mentioned, check your routers webpage logs to see how much traffic is being transferred. That will give you the exact answer and won't be affected by any badly setup programs. If someone is using your connection to download large amounts then it will show it. No false reporting, it's the gateway into your network which everything goes through.

It's often accessed by typing 192.168.1.254 into the address bar, a username and password is usually required and that is often Administrator and the password is either Administrator for older devices or the serial number on the bottom of the router for newer ones.

The Ip address could be different on some routers and you would need to find out what to use.

I have said several times this is not a problem with data transfer off the internet, it is local.

I've identified, where the, probably false, readings are coming from and probably the program responsible. i was hope someone with more techie knowledge than myself could explain, what the
Realtek PCIe FE family controller - Deterministic network enhancer miniport
is actually doing and if there was a sensible reason for the monitoring levels being too high.

You've asked a lot of questions, been given a lot of answers, but have provided very little feedback, and I think most people don't understand your problem. Your attitude doesn't help either. I think you're saying you've got loads of data flying around your home network, not in and out of internet.
First thing to do, as suggested above, is turn everything off. Then router on, then 1 computer on. Check traffic. Turn on next computer, check traffic. Continue to do this, and try to find the rogue device. You're looking for a needle in a haystack at the mo. Turning off wireless will help track down the culprit. Once you've found the 1 or 2 computers, we can start looking at what's causing it.

its been running for around half an hour and shows 6715KB of usage

I wonder if the OP is aware just how little "6715KB" of data actually is? and if some figures are being confused?

there is a difference between Kb and KB, also between GB and Gb.

storage and most people deal in Bytes, but comms deals in bits - roughly about 10 bits in a byte by the time you take handshaking and the other extra packets added to the data.

    could this be your problem?
