Refunds if the train is late

Thought some people might find this helpful, particulary with the train delays at the moment.

Most train companies will give you a refund if the train is delayed, though the amount and the time can vary with the company.

My local one gives -
50% of a single or 25% of a return for delays 30-59 mins
100% of a single or 50% of a return for delays 1 hour to 1hour 59 mins
100% of a return ticket for delays of more than 2 hours

The train companies don't exactly go out of their way to advertise it - you generally have to ask for a form and send off for it.
Only after the last tree has been cut down,
Only after the last river has been poisoned,
Only after the last fish has been caught,
Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten

they should all refund from 15 minutes 100%. from 30 mins means they can ALL run as late as possible... Southern Railway in particular use this to their advantage.
  • What if you just buy the ticket on the day of travel?

I bought an off-peak return (valid for use within a month) yesterday and was stuck behind a broken down train for about an hour and a half.

Does that entitle me to some sort of refund from the travel company?

Get a form filled in. Most companies will refund around half of the return fare.
  • Some companies will refund more than their standard T&Cs say, at their discretion. I had a 100% refund on a train that was only delayed by 15 minutes, I think it was Northern Rail. (I know that might sound quite sad that I bothered to complain about a relatively small delay, but I complain about absolutely every delayed journey because it's always worth it to get rail vouchers back!)
