Unsolicited call wanting £19 for blocking unwanted calls

Hi
Couldn't find this posted - sorry if it has been! I just had a call this evening from a lady saying she was calling on behalf of my telephone provider and then told me my name, address & telephone number.
She said she was setting up a lifetime service of blocking unwanted phone calls (oh the irony!) for a one off charge of £19
I advised her I had already signed up (for free) for the Telephone Preference Service some years ago and this is possibly the only unsolicited call I have had since then.
I then hung up - if I had been less irritated I might have interrogated her a bit more about who she was and where she got my details.
After I hung up I did 1471 and the phone number was 01234567898 - a weird number that I then googled and found a few other people posting online that they had calls too, so I came to look on MSE !!
Just wanted to warn others - although I think people are pretty good at being on scam alert!!

01234567898 is not a real telephone number. It's spoofed
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing

here is one of the 'companies' mentioned on the TPS site:http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/news1.html
Bogus TPS Calls
TPS will not call a subscriber of the service to ask for personal details or payment to complete a registration. If you have registered via the web and have received an e-mail confirmation and clicked on the attached link, that's it! Your number will be registered with the FREE TPS. We will not contact you again in relation to your registration (please note if you have number(s) registered with the Corporate TPS, you must renew your subscription annually. We will contact you when this is due).
If you do receive a call from someone claiming to be from the TPS or a similar sounding organisation, asking for personal information or charging you for this service, please check that it was the TPS you registered with and not another organisation offering similar services. Some of these companies are listed below:
http://www.callstop.info/
http://www.callpreventionregistry.co.uk/
http://www.stopunwantedcalls.net/
http://www.nomoremarketing.co.uk/
All of the above are commercial organisations, all of which charge for a service which is unregulated.
We have also been made aware of an overseas company claiming to be BT, asking for your credit card details to stop unwanted calls. This is a scam. Never give out your credit card details over the phone.
One such company calling from India, who are charging people a fee (usually around £20 or £30) to register for the FREE TPS, go by several different names:
Icon Global Services
IG Services
ITC
Biztek (or Bisdek) Telecomms
Consumer Advice Bureau
- our advice is NOT to pay them.
If you have any information on these types of calls (phone number, web address), please send details to scott@dma.org.ukhttp://www.callcentersindia.com/showall-orig.php?value1=77159_DAILY_PAYMENTS_UK-USA_TPS-DNC_OUTBOUND_PROCESS

the caller offered to stop all unwanted calls and take legal action against any breaches for a "lifetime fee of £39.99" for which i would receive a "password".
[]
they gave a website: https://www.stopunwantedcalls.net and a phone number: 0871 288 0958...............
[]
the two callers (including a "supervisor") sounded as if they were speaking from india or pakistan. On dialling 1471 no number was available, indicating an overseas call.......http://dnc-register.com/contactus.html
