Hi everyone,
I have lived at my sisters for about 5 months now & have to move out in the new year. Have registered with the local council but the waiting list is huge. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could rent somewhere. I have a poor credit history, not too well off either, however I can afford to private rent if its not too steep.
My sister has been very helpful to me but I feel I need a place of my own as the dining room floor is not the best place to live. Also I know she private rents & I dont think I should really be living here.
Can anyone help ???
many thanks

Are you working, what age are you?If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

Perhaps being a lodger in someone's home would be a more economical option for you. Plus landlords who live on the premises rarely take up credit-references but any sensible one would want a deposit from you. Or a flat/house-share depending on your age etcetera0

Have look at MSE Martins info on improving your credit rating, on the main part of this site.
Save up as much as you can whilst you are at your sister's home.
If you are on a low income see if you would qualify for help with a bond guarantee via the local Council.
Is there anyone who would be in a position to act as a guarantor for you for your initial 6 months? ( you would need to checj the guanrtor agreement wording carefully)
B&Ts suggestion of becoming a lodger as an initial step is a good one. If you managed to pay a few month's rent on time you'd have a useful reference provider for when you're ready to look at a flat or whatever0 -
thanks for the quick replies,
I am working at the moment, aged late 30's
Just come out of a marriage & I thought it better that I move out so that the kids have a place to live etc
guarantor not really an option, by lodger do you mean house share ?
I really need my own space so that I can take the kids home on weekends. If I was to share with someone I am not sure that they would want me bringing my kids in to their home.
I guess my only real option at the moment is to flat share
thanks all0 -
Hi
You may need to flat or house share so that you can develop a record of good payment over the next 6 months and then look at a studio or flat?
Also check out the LHA rate for your area; if your income is low enough, you may get help with housing. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
No, by lodger I meant living in someone else's home but I can see that as you have nippers who you'd like to have over at the weekends this probably wouldn't suit.
Have you looked at the National Landlords Association website? There's a "Find A Property" option where you can search by post-code. Contact every single landlord on there and ask if they have properties or know of someone who does. It might be best if you have a search on RightMoves or similar to get an idea of local rent-levels first if you don't know already.0 -
thanks thats great advice, didnt know that website existed0
