It doesn't fall under data protection legislation but I think common courtesy of respecting the buyers privacy pretty much covers it.
Once the vendors have an interest in your transaction I can see why they need those details but until they've confirmed they are willing to deal with you, you should be allowed to keep your buyers out of it.0 -
One option could be that this is being kept for someone "in house". It would be fully wrong to reject higher offers and allow an "insider" to get this at a lower price - but it can happen. It may not be the case here, but you never know. They may have just instructed the EA not to pass on offers less than what they want to accept (a minimum price), strange way the EA is doing it though.
I would put your offer direct to the vendor - let them decide.

Under The Estate Agents Act 1979 EAs are legally obliged to pass on all offers to the vendors. However, if they have said to the EA 'oh only tell us about offers over 200k' they can act in accordance with this....

I can understand that the EA wants to know that you are in a position to proceed, however, they have no legal right to demand this. You could ask you solicitor to put the offer in by fax. It would be acted on then.Light Bulb Moment - 11th Nov 2004 - Debt Free Day - 25th Mar 2011 :j0 -
Checking the chain is one of the 1st things any decent agent should do. Theres no point in going to your vendor with an offer which you have no background on for the rest of the chain.
However, this is a telephone call that takes v little time. I never bothered asking the buyer for this - better to go straight to their agent and check the chain. It should have taken less than 24hrs£2 Savers Club #156!
