Barclaycard retention offer - £20 credit to stay

This is bit of an odd one.

I've held Barclaycard Onepulse for 2 years and paid all my dues on time. Never in red, no late payments nothing. I called them last week to cancel and they tried putting down various offers like 0% balance transfer for x months , etc. I told them that I was not at all interested and I was cancelling it as I don't use the card much. They then said don't cancel the card, as a loyal customer, we will give you a credit of £20 on your card. I was shocked, I didn't cancel my card then. The next day I checked my online balance and they did give me a credit of £20.

I am not sure why they did this. I don't spend much, just around £80-100 a month thats it. Not at all a heavy spender.

  • Ask them to BACS the £20 and then close it anyway.
  • I would recommend you spend the £20 they gave you then close the account if you dont need it.

Barclaycard gave me 2 x £20 House of Fraser vouchers for signing up to paperless statements a few weeks ago:cool:

they also have regular 0% balance transfer offers - so I won't be closing my accounts;)

your choice to close it though :rotfl:

I have been offered (and accepted) £5 or £10 by Barclaycard to keep the account open, even when I only use the card for 0% balance transfers, always pay on time, and never for purchases (where they make most money).
So - spend on the card til it's used up then close it anyway!

  • Ive got a barclaycard sitting here doing nothing, might have to give them a call and see what offers I get!
  • yeah.. credit card companies are getting desperate..if you don't use the card they do not make money..I called to cancel my RBS card.. they begged me to stay with 0% offers..

Back from the dead thread but this is exactly on point.

I have the OnePulse card, and it is no longer available to new customers. I'm an Amex customer so I use this as a reserve card for when Amex isn't accepted, but really like that I save a slot in the wallet for Oyster. I don't pay interest so I am not super profitable but even as my secondary card, I have charged healthy five-figure amounts to it so the interchange fee will be better than a kick in the teeth - a reckon a couple of hundred a year, and paperless billing and direct debit. Absent this experience I never contact them: I'm cheap for them.

However I really don't like Barclaycard. I hate their constant text messages and tacky marketing bumph on cheap shiny paper offering loans month in, month out; their premium-rate phone lines; their stupid points scheme that only works in Pizza Express; the handling of suspected fraud; the fact they think international travel is bizarre and that you should call them first - I could go on. I particularly hate that once you get past the lengthy but calculatingly informal voicemail hell there's a 75% chance of getting through to the offshore call centre, and the brain numbing pointlessness of any off-the-script conversation.

So I like the card but don't like the people that offer it. My choice, fine. But I thought I would try and tip the scales and ask retentions and I have just found it impossible to even get put through to them. In fact the sheer impossibility is so annoying I want to cancel. Catch-22!

The guy in India told me that the best they can do is the Barclaycard Freedom points - i.e. the Pizza Express money, i.e. absolutely nothing, go if you're gonna go. All the numbers on Say No to 0870 don't work or go to India. If I ask to cancel, they will just cancel: do not pass go, and certainly do not collect £200. Or even £50 or £20.

So what's the deal - am I too optimistic about what retentions will do? Post-Egg are they trying to shrink? Or is it just that I am right about the offshore call centres and the people there can't even deviate from the script even to keep a customer?
