  • I know to some people it would not matter, but because I am so carefull now about money and everything it just really got to me. The woman was so rude and made me feel like a criminal.

They have lost a customer now though as I will go somewhere else.
    Thanks for all your replys:)

Contrary to ILW's rather brief post, I don't in any way whatsoever, think you are making a 'fuss over nothing'.

The counter clerk actually was totally in the wrong....and that is before he/she was proven to be in the wrong.

I would complain in the strongest terms, not just to the manager, but to the owners of the shop, regarding the extremely poor customer care skills displayed that day.

Those who advocate you are 'making a mountain out of a molehill' are either more than willing to allow a status quo to remain, regardless...or are trolling!

Changes in attitudes or procedures will never occur if people remain silent.

Retail undertakings must be compelled to institute a procedure to deal with such instances, which are guaranteed not to cause embarrassment to the customer!

As for the 'feelings' of the counter clerk? Well...on this particular side of MSE I find attitudes to be somewhat hypocritical in the least...especially when, in the next breath [so to speak] we all advocate leading call centre operators into the pits of hell!

    Or...is that somehow different?

I have had similar experiences of late.....especially, as it happens, in Tesco's , of all places!

In two separate instances, in different [but local] stores, I have found staff attitude to be less than acceptable.

The first instance occurred when, having filled a large trolley with all sorts..especially fresh and frozen produce....at the till I was informed my card was not accepted by the machine.

I knew the money was available in the account...more than tenfold as it happened.

I asked for the card to be manually scanned, but the till operator refused.

The supervisor had the gall to suggest I nip out to the Cashpoint, and return with the cash!

Given the large quantity of shopping, this seemed like the most expedient thing to do....certainly from their viewpoint!

But, I am of an age where I will not be pushed around like some juvenile teenager in school!

I went to the cash machine.....actually extracted vastly more than was necessary to pay for the goods..then thought...just what the hell am I doing?

I walked back in, waved the cash in the air, then walked back out again.....leaving all the shopping strewn in the trolley or over the till!

The Supervisor pursued me into the car park, where she was told, in no uncertain terms, exactly who was the most important person to Tesco's at that point, and that I refuse to be embarrassed any further by staff attitudes, especially when it [eventually] turned out their card reader was faulty!

I got an apology......and someone had to be diverted to return all the goods I hadn't bought, to the shelves!

No skin off my nose....I can shop elsewhere....gotta car, so no bother!

so...don't just stand there and cringe at lousy customer care behaviour...pursue the matter to get it corrected....
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

  • when I worked in sainsburys (ok, many years ago now!) we were always taught to be very polite, if a card was declined ( in those days it came up with a code, which told you if it was declined for lack of funds, stolen or other reason). If after trying it a couple of times, it still failed, we were told to either ask the customer to try another card, or get the supervisor to call for authorisation. When I was a supervisor, I would regularly (several times per day) ring to do this, and always apologised to the customer for the inconvenience. Those were the days!!!

On another note, I use an internet games site, and they debit a small fee monthly from my card (well, they did until the BR!!). This would always trigger an alert which stopped my card, as apparently this is what fraudsters do to see if a card can be blitzed. Despite ringing and even writing to the company about it, they did it every flaming month. So I got very used to standing at the till with a trolley load of stuff, and an unauthorised card.....at least in these modern times I could stand at the till and phone the card customer services to get it released then and there....didn't stop the funny looks though.....ggrrrr
