Burning movies to DVD

I have been burning some movies to DVD using Verbatim DVD +RW x4 and was wondering as they play great in my DVD player and not just on PC would the other speeds work the same? like the x16 discs and what is the differance in real terms between the speeds of the discs? if speed is higher does that mean you can store more on each disc and would they still play the same?

Thank you so much for your time answering this.

The speed is just the maximum speed they 'should' burn at
Playback wont be affected at all, and neither is size

  • so buying a x16 will burn faster and still play the same I take it.

  • Some player can have problems with disks burnt at high speeds. All you can do is test them in your DVD player to see if they work without issue when burnt at x16.

Higher speed disks are guaranteed to be able to be burnt at the specified speed. The cheap brands might be rated at x16 but can turn out as coasters or not play well in some devices.

    Yes (theoretically)
In practice a lot of these faster discs fail at high speed so need to be slowed down anyways

  • Thats why I asked as not saving if will not work and have to do them over on slower discs. maybe I will stick to the 4x as so far I have not had a bad one. I only wish to have the movies we buy on file as backup as son scratches them by not taking care of them so rather than buy new I burn a copy and if he trashes it I still have original one as back up. I also find I can have 3 or 4 movies per disc so saves me money there.

  • You could turn on verify if your backup software has the feature. Or you could perform a quality scan of the disk after burning, that will indicate the DVD quality as better quality disks show less recoverable errors than cheaper brands. But your PC DVD drive would need to be able to do error scanning, some cannot.

I never burn at more than 8x anyway even with "faster discs".
24x dvd burners are a joke as the dvd media are years behind.

My old lite-on DVDRW burns better at 16x than at 8x. It doesnt like being stranged down to slower speeds that
is the only time i ever get verify errors.

Theres always exceptions to the rule. Clearly your drive simply didnt like going slower (Probably induced vibration more)
