Cancelled new York flight

I was suppose to be flying to New York but the flight was cancelled. We were due to fly at 4.10 but it was delayed until 5.30, after getting on the plane we were then taken off at 9pm after the pilot announced technical difficulties from a reoccurring problem. From 9pm until 12.30am we then had to que to be given a hotel voucher with breakfast and were rebooked onto a flight for the next day at 3.45pm to a different ny airport. I have lost a nights hotel in ny at a cost of $329 and airport transfers. How much compensation can I claim? Can I get Ba to compensate for all of this and more? I do have travel insurance so I can I claim from both?

Thanks

Firstly, ask BA to e mail you a reason for the cancellation.

I would make sure that the flight was described as canceled, and not just delayed. This will impact on how much compensation you are entitled to. AFAIK BA will not compensate you for the nights hotel and transfers you lost out on because they will have something in the T&C's about them only being responsible for the flight and nothing else related to it. Cityboy might be around to explain or send him a PM
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Your travel insurance (most, anyway) will pay you a flat rate regardless of anything you get out of BA. Some might pay for the cancelled hotel, etc but they are few and far between.
  • Most insurances will pay out only if delayed over 12hours.

My company’s ATOL/ABTA numbers are 70126 MSE doesn't check my status as a Travel Agent, so you need to take my word for it. ATOL numbers can be checked with the Civil Aviation Authority. This signature is here as I follow MSE's Travel Agent Code of Conduct.

The delay was over 23 hours so I'm not sure why you've brought this up.
