Confused re photo download progs

I am just looking for some advice.

I have Photoshop Elements installed on my laptop but have always just used Microsoft to store and view pictures after editing woith photoshop.

Until recently have had a canon camera but didn't get on with the software. Have bought a Nikon S3000 and that comes with software for storage/editing.

Would like to just use one piece of software but am confused as to which will suit me best. As I have recently reformatted and reinstalled am happy to strat again.

One problem appears to be that I cannot download any videos taken with the nikon so I assume that I need the Nikon software installed to do that.

Should I use photoshop to edit and another programme to store or will I end up with duplicates.

Although I am very computer literate the software etc for cameras seems to fuddle my brain.

Thank you for any advice or help.

  • Might be worth looking into Picasa 2 by Google. It will organise your pictures and give you basic 'fix it' functionality (red eye, tones, colours, shadows, text)

It will also store them in a catalogue by date and then you can add descriptions etc. Will also further narrow it down by which camera it was shot on, what day it was edited. Very nice easy to use software.

Catch is I still don't think it will cure your problem of getting the video. For this you may have to use the Nikon software. Does it not just appear as a removable drive?

    thank you for your reply

Camera appears as a removable drive but only with static pics - I have tried taking out memory card in case it stores videos on internal hard drive but that didn't work either. Have tried downloading though my computer - removable drive etc and using microsoft download manager.

I don't see any need for you to use either the camera software or MS Download Manager in order to store pictures on your PC.

Either connect the camera to USB, or connect card through card reader, and open folder for same.

Open a target or destination folder on the PC.

Right-click the photos and/or videos to copy to PC, and click Copy in the sub-menu. Right-click in the target folder and click Paste.

    Use Photoshop to edit.

What did you do with the card once it was out of the camera? Put it in a card reader attached to the computer?

Which operating system are you using?

No I took the card out to check if there was an internal memory that I could access. It finds the still pics fine when the card is in the camera.

    Windows XP SP 3
  • Make sure the video recording settings on your camera are set to save to the memory card, not the device itself

That is pretty much the only thing that could happen, unless for some reason it is hiding them (control panel > folders > hide hidden folders/files)
