UPDATE - adopting an older cat

I posted a while ago about where my sister could find an older cat to share her home with.

Well she has met a very pretty 7yr old cat and been approved at her home.

The lady who is fostering her is desperate to have her moved asap as she is so scared of the other cats/dogs she has.

The little miss has been waiting for a forever home for nearly 2 years and i think in a few days she will become one of the most spoilt cats in surrey.

I will post a piccy when she has settled into her new home.

thanks for all those who offered suguestions and help.

  • That's lovely news :) Can't believe she had to wait two years for her own home! I bet she'll reward your sister with years of love and loyalty :)
  • That's the sort of lovely happy ending that beings tears to my soppy old heart. Thank you!
  • Are older cats as hard to re-home as older dogs then? I know some people worry about ingrained bad habits but I think usually it is because the older the animal the less time you have with them. I adopted a 6 year old boxer and only had her for 6 (lovely) years because sadly boxers tend not to be a long-lived breed, plus she had a heart murmur. However, I understand that cats tend to live longer than dogs - I know quite a few people whose cats lived anything between 17 and 21 years so a 7 year old cat could still have many years of life.

It's nice to hear of older animals getting adopted - I hope your sister does indeed have many years with her! :santa2:

she will settle in but give her time all the same. it will be a huge change for her. we homed an older cat in september after i lost one of mine. she is 5 and her elderly owner died we were told.

she was frightened and i suspect that over the years she was either teased or shouted at for trying to steal food from plates and this has made her wary (she's quite greedy) but is more and more trusting as time goes on. she has commandered the bed at night so i cnt move around!! today,, ALL day she has snuggled into the bed spread, right inside it, that sits on the spare sofa, she's so sweet.

i also read that black or black and white cats are left languishing and she is black and white and so sweet.

she has a nasty habit of missing the cat litter tray so i end up wiping up loads of puddles but no one's perfect.

I can't understand why black and black and white cats are overlooked. I adopted two sisters, one black and the other black and white and they are sooo pretty and much admired by all who meet them!
  • That's such a lovely, happy ending, thank you so much.

With love and patience I'm sure your sister will help this lucky cat to adjust to her new home. Perhaps a Feliway plug-in would help initially and some very soft music (think one of those relaxation CDs) playing gently in the background will help 'mask' any odd noises that might upset her. A nice fleecy throw for her to sleep on (all our cats love fleece) would be very comforting.

I've also heard that all-black cats are the last to be chosen from rescue shelters, sad isn't it. Our first two cats were (unrelated) adults from a local cat rescue - of unknown ages but probably around 5 or 6. They settled in beautifully. The male was a huge black and white gentle giant - the softest, most loyal cat ever. The girl was longhaired white with black spots - she was also incredibly loving and adored everyone! Riff Raff, the boy lived to be approx 17 years old and Magenta, the girl, lived to an incredible 20+ ! Currently we have an all black female, Lou-Lou, whom we discovered, apparently dumped, along with her brother at the bottom of our very long garden. And we're just integrating our recently 'found' tabby boy Lancelot (again, possibly dumped, we have no idea).

With good care, cats can live a long time! I wish your sister great happiness with her new companion.

My Daisy is a B&W British Shorthair who spent a good two years of her three years in the ASSISI animal sancturary.Like others have said, she's the most loving, cuddly ball of fur you could wish for & loves to spend her time asleep on the bed or on my lap.
I too had heard that B&W furbabes are often over looked,I'll admit it did take a while to get used to her unusual markings but she's such a cutie..
Here's Daisy; (sorry to hijack the thread...She's just too cute not to show off....)
