Thank you for all your replies. :T

I'll explain why I posted this topic. The better half and I have our house on the market. We have discussed what we'll do in the event of receiving an offer that we consider reasonable. She feels we shouldn't mess around and that a reasonable offer should be accepted outright. I fear accepting a reasonable offer outright may leave the purchaser feeling they have overpaid. I hope that making a counter offer and then negotiating towards an agreed figure, even if this figure is the same as the original offer, will leave the purchaser feeling they have paid a 'fair' price. By the looks of your replies most of you seem to agree with me.

I'll now show her this whole thread.

Then I'll duck and weave. ;)
  • I'd get Fred up to 111 or 112 because he's going to try to wheedle more when he gets the survey anyway.

The survey comes in, Fred whines and you go back to 110 but no more and everyone gets the price they wanted.

My hubby's like your wife. He would have wanted to accept anything for the house in order to get the one we wanted, and he wanted to pay full asking price on the house we're buying (and maybe more to secure it!!!!!!!!) and I told him to let me do any negotiating and banned him from speaking to the EAs we're buying through lol! Got it for £15k under the asking price. Some people just need reining in ;)
