Advice please. constipated cat.

I have a nine year old tabby cat called Bubbles. She normally goes to the toilet outside but today started using a litter tray again for the first time since kittenhood. Anyway she is acting a bit strange hiding in corners, behind doorways and even behind the toilet. i will be ringing the vet tomorrow for advice too and will brave the weather and take her there if needs be.My husband thinks shes constipated or has some kind of blockage cos she keeps licking her bum. i was just wondering if other cat owners have experienced anything like this and would welcome your opinions. Thanks.

    Hi dark lady

That does sound like it could well be constipation. Your vet will be able to feel your cat's abdomen to determine whether or not her colon has any poo in it, and if it is hard and impacted (mmm nice!). Hopefully it is nothing more complicated than a one off dose of constipation and your vet can clear the blockage by administering an enema.

I have a cat with chronic constipation and which has been diagnosed with megacolon. If your vet makes this diagnosis please please please drop me a line as I am part of an online support group which has given me heaps and heaps of excellent advice which has proven invaluable to me in managing my cat's condition. I will be only too glad to put you in touch with the group if it so happens you need advice or opinion from lots of other cat owners who are coping with this problem.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I give, under vet advice, a small amount of milk for a puss with constipation. BUT definitely make sure that is what it is.

ps pls dont start panicking it might be megacolon ,more likely constipated due to not going outside in this wather :)

  • Is she urinating normally, have you noticed?

Cats suffering from cystitis can act strangely due to their discomfort, and lick their bottoms because it is so sore.

Let us know what the vet says, hope she's ok.

Thankyou very much for the replies fellow cat lovers. Phoned the vet this morning and they said it sounded like cystitis. Have an appointment at 4.40pm. She peed in the bath earlier which is not like her at all. Poor lil girl. I dont have children so she is like my little baby. She is napping at the mo. She has tried to use the litter tray as well. i am showing her lots of love and fuss to let her know i am not mad at her.Shes usually a feisty one (vets words not mine) and will try to get her into the cat carry case soon but as she knows herself shes not well she might get in there without fighting it. The vet nurse advised me to use a bath towel if she resists but i dont think she will. Thanks again everyone xx

Update. Bubbles was given an antibiotic injection and Cystaid tablets which she has to have twice a day and Metacam oral suspension which she has to have once a day with food for five days and a plug in Feliway diffuser to calm her stress. The vet had a good feel of her and said her bowels arent blocked which is good. She seems to be having a good sleep now and seems calmer. We managed to get her into her carry case cos my husband picked her up while she was still half asleep and gently placed her inside. After the vet had finished, Bubbles willingly got back into the case. I think she was scared the vet was gonna give her a second injection. They did say that very rarely the Metacam can cause vomiting and diarrheoa so thay gave us the number of a 24 hour vet but it only happens rarely so keeping everything crossed hopefully shell be fine now. A 24 hour no for a local vet is handy to have though. Thankyou again for all your kind posts and well wishes xxx
