DVD Playing Up

Hi all

Sorry if this question is a bit simple. Of late my DVD has started to play up.
When playing a DVD the picture starts skipping and stalling and when I put a new DVD into the machine it sometimes can't read the disc. This includes film DVD's bought from the shop. Some DVD's that worked previously now do not read. I went out and bought a "cleaning" DVD but when I insert that it won't read.
Have any bright people got any ideas?

This could be anything from a dirty lens to a major internal failure of some kind. You could try getting a canister of air and squirting that in the slot (they usually come with a thin pipe) to see if you can dislodge any dirt but be warned that that could cause more damage.

Some DVD players have a service mode in which you can do an automatic realignment of the optical head but I have only tried it once and it didn't seem to do very much. You could try Googling for "<DVD player> service mode" and see if anything turns up.
