i got about 3 or 4 external hard drives and want to sort through them all and put onto one, my laptop only has 3 USB ports, one for the mouse so wondered if you can get a multi adapter to plug into one USB that will take 3 or 4 extra accessories?

If you have space, copy to the laptop first, then transfer to usb. If these are backup of important data, it's safer to keep 2 or more copies!!
