AIUI across the pensions environment there is now more of a trend towards passivity in terms of general shareholding but with a growth in the use of diversified growth funds (active funds but with a wider remit if you like). If I was in the position to look for an investment vehicle, everything I've learned also points towards a very basic tracker with low fees being the best way forward (as Gen, GDB and tomterm suggest, though obviously as a trustee I can't advise.
Horses for courses, in very efficient markets where most of the info is 'out there' trackers perform relatively well (UK/US), in more imperfect markets like Asia and Emerging a steady hand on the tiller is probably wise (I personally like First State for this).'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. When people invest and hold shares (i.e. part of a company), they pay tax on the investment (tax being difficult to avoid).

Not really with a £10k allowance every year, unless of course you are a real high roller'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. My family used to own a gold mine or two. I wonder what happened to them?0 -

I was looking after late Granny-in-Law's dog Lady while staying with the definitely not late in-Laws as a payment for the rent.
Lady is in fine form. She now gets wormed 4 times a year (we get heart worm in Sydney which is almost as pleasant as it sounds like it would be) so I did A Good Deed For The Dog. She did me a favour by getting the kids to be less scared of dogs.
I told the kids today that the spiders in England don't bite you. They didn't believe me I think.0 -
I believe he gave it to Dopester...the rest as they say is history.Doozergirl wrote: »Was it a dog you found a while back, I can't quite remember. What happened to it?I think....0

A friend of my kids got married about 3 or 4 years ago, and is now getting divorced. Unfortunately, there are now two children.
The thing is that, some time before he got married, he borrowed a computer from me, and when he returned it it was obvious that he'd got rather a keen interest in homosexual images. That's not too serious, as he was young, and maybe he was experimenting. But there were no female images at all. My wife and I counselled him to follow his natural inclinations and not feel that he ought to do the conventional thing, but he took advice from his priest (he is quite religious) and went ahead and married. Such a nice, decent guy, and such a disaster!
I was at school with a girl who had, erm "looser morals";). If rumours were to be believed, she had a fairly voracious appetite. A new lad started, and she was onto him after a few months. His dad was a vicar.:D
For several months this girl defied all expectations and assumptions about her previous behaviour, as he firmly believed in no sex before marriage.
As time went by, she had an itch, & began to let him know what she was after. As time went on, her demands increased in their frequency. Eventually, I believe she gave him a mini ultimatum.
He approached his dad for advice. His dad's advice was "Pray, son. God will direct you."
So he forked her...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

There was a news report of gold in Wales last week - some stream or other that hobbyists are panning.... they'll never get rich, but it's fun as they enjoy "the find" even if you need a magnifying glass to see one granule in their sieve.

I picked up beehives today.
They smell AMAZING. They are dh's thing, not mine and my dad wants to help with the bees too, I'll be happy to have the honey and the wax though. I love the smell of beeswax candes, which is funny, because I hate those very sweet scented ''food'' candles and I don't like to smell of candy in the bath/perfume.
Speaking of smells and perfume, my favourite scent has been discontinues and I still haven't found a replacement. One problem with not living in/near a good town/city is doing things like choosing scent because you need time and a few visits. Then you forget the smell of the things on your shortlist.0 -

As for forgetting, if you can remember to get some tiny resealable plastic bags, about 2"x3" or so, then when you go into the shops get them to spray the smell onto a strip of card and you can shove the card in there with the name written on it.0
