I have worked with volunteers for a lot of my working life. Like your students, the volunteers used to cover for me when management would call (luckily, they weren't based in the same building...) so they'd answer the phone saying "he's here, I'm sure 've seen him, very busy...." then put the phone down & under their breathe pray I was due in & would get there soon & safely.:D
I had a fantastic relationship with the volunteers. All of them knew I'd fight tooth & nail for them. I looke after them, & they more than reciprocated.
Wonderful people to work with. I miss them.
Oho! So your team used to say "he's here, I'm sure I've seen him" did they? I can't believe nobody else noticed that - unless lj came out as male a while ago and I missed it.
Anyway, I've just been trying to catch up on five pages of this thread, and can't comment on everything but want to say a few things:
1) Davesnave I love your sig. :T
2) I also really don't like the kitchens that everybody is supposed to want. I especially don't like stone or ceramic floors - so unforgiving if you drop breakable things, slippery when wet and freezing cold for people like me who like to wander round barefoot when at home. :(The same applies in bathrooms.
I don't like open plan houses either - my kids are old enough not to need to be watched all the time, and I like to be able to shut the door on the chaos they create so I don't have to look at it.
3) Yes please Doozer I would love to see your before and after pics. And lir, you were thinking of showing us some floor plans?
4) I still haven't exchanged - the members of the chain are still making suggestions and counter-suggestions about possible completion dates. I have missed my Jan rent day for giving notice and will now have to pay rent up to 7th March instead of 7th Feb. However, it seems likely completion will be before the end of Jan, and my builder thinks he can get everything done in a week to 10 days, so I'm hoping to move in by the end of Feb and have 1st-7th March for sorting this place out to maximise the amount of deposit I get back. Initial signs are that the LA is realistic about the extent of wear and tear to be expected after five and a half years.
5) Tonight I had a breakthrough with DS. A small piece of plastic film had peeled off the mobile phone that late-nearly-ex's parents had given him for Christmas, and it was triggering his eeek feelings about loss. But this time, instead of saying he wanted the losses to stop, he said he wanted to stop feeling unable to cope with loss. I think that's a huge step forwards. :j

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
It's insane being up this time of the morning LydiaJ
I skipped through all the kitchen/house talk really, it's quite depressing not having a home, not being able to have my things around me and have a 'sense of place' at all. I seem to spend my days just looking at houses for sale, and recipes I could cook ... and wishing
I still can't decide where to go to next, and it's hard trying to rent a "cheap as chips, but lovely looking, place, that ticks the boxes, in an area you've never been too, that's in a safe area and has off road parking" when you're 200 miles away, so I think I'll be on the move again in about 10 days' time... book into a hotel for 2-4 weeks for a nosey around in Darzit.
Houses are 10-a-penny, 1-bed places are mostly dire and in the nasty areas and studentland. Don't want to end up living alongside noisy, drug-taking, partying chavs again, with their loud mates that slam communal doors and clomp up/down stairs and bang and bash doors at all hours.... again.
With no top ups and no benefits, rent + bills will take up almost 100% of my income, so it's a tough call.... should I stretch to something out of my price range and spend everything on rent/bills, or not. So hard to decide.0 -
It's not easy, I agree.
I hope you get some space when you're on your travels, anyway, and that some kind of breakthrough happens for you - a wonderful place that becomes unexpectedly available, or a sudden take-off in your internet income, or a job, or something.
PS Yes, it is insane. I'm going to try to go to sleep now!Do you know anyone who's bereaved? LJ outed himself a while ago IIRC, but well done for spotting that. I can't say why, but I always had LJ down as a bloke.
Living here, I can see why we have ceramic floors, with all the grit & mud that finds its way in, but I'd prefer real wood. These days, concrete floors are built with insulation, which helps reduce the chill factor.
I agree about open plan and separate rooms for different activities, but maybe others are more disciplined than me - I like my clutter in well-defined clutter places!:o
Sorry you've not exchanged yet, but I'm sure it will happen. Believe me, it is worth having plenty of time to extricate yourself from one property, fit everything into the next and then clean-up. I was still barrowing things out of the back gate as the buyers' furniture van was on its way....and we had bags of time! :rotfl:
The sig is probably short term, like my memory. I saw something brilliant to write there, made a mental note of it and then, like all the measurements we took of this place, ready for the architect, it disappeared into thin air.0 -

Your dear, dear son.
Anyway, kitchens. I like barefeet too but I'm finally ''getting''slippers now i my thirtiesI like stone/ceramic floors because they are very easy to clean. with dogs in the house very important. And when as clumsy as me even more important. Rugs that was can cozy things up...and er.....under floorheating
Hate open plan houses too. I like to be able to hide mess and also to have some privacy at times.
Also I lie to cook things like cabbage, which I would not like to sit and smell in my sitting room/bath/bedroom.0 -
I am another disliker of open plan, a begger to heat in the cold weather, nowhere to close yourself off from children (or ex mother in laws
), lack of privacy etc.
But I do like big rooms, natural big rooms which were always big...our first flat had a massive front room with a bay where I could sit and watch the world go by (1st floor flat), we never had to worry about the size of the sofa etc, here I have a smallish front room where we have to constantly worry about the size of furniture.
I would love to have a study rather than being in my cupboard under the stairs, I would be able to have any computer desk and seat I wanted rather than trying to squish it all in, in the space under the stairs. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

You're lucky you've not spent a lifetime living in tiny spaces, it really gets me down.0 -

Pastures, how would you feel about moving to the north of the UK where you could get a house by the sea for cheaper? Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.
