Paint before or after kitchen units?

Having a new kitchen soon, a couple of walls will need re-skimming.

My preference will be to let it dry, paint with watered down white paint, then paint with my new kitchen colour (dulux kitchen paint, with a softish sheen)..then put the units up, so no paint splashes on my new kitchen, no arkward corners to reach etc.

There are several problems/questions with this..

Snow has delayed electrician and plasterer, so we dont necessarily have the time we hoped between plastering and units going in.

How long should I ideally leave the skimmed wall before emulsion undercoat?

Would the 'kitchen' paint (as it has a sheen) not let the wall breath as well, if I paint too soon.

Do I need to paint the parts of the wall that will be behind units?

Should I just let the kitchen fitter do the units first, then buy a small brush and lots of masking tape and paint after?

Thanks for the reply!! The kitchen fitter now wants to plaster one day and put the units in the next day, so there will probably be no time for painting at all:eek:. Im worried about moisture behind the units if the skim is still drying, but he says it will be ok.

Fab idea about getting the ceiling done at least, as theres always lots of speckles/drips from that!

Don't let him hang anything before it's dry, you are asking for problems. If it is only skimming allow at list 2-3 days before working on the walls.

I was hoping for plastering today and fitting not till at least next moday, but he cant get here to plaster today, however theres a delay on the kitchen delivery now.

Im just worried i'll be backed into a corner and he will come the day before the kitchen arrives to plaster, what kind of problems could it lead to? Damp in the cupboards, plaster falling off?

We are having quartz worktops, so dont want to potentially have to take that and the cupboards out for remedial work if things do go wrong!
