TBH the wellies i did this to last year didn't seem to chafe - however i tend to stick me jeans in the top to stop em getting too wet and soggy...

and i measured down from the top like Stilt walker said, and a pair of sharp scissors worked for me - the thought of a knife seemed a bit dangerous - i'd either cut bot sides at once or myself....

I bought some fleece welly liners on ebay which fold over the top and they make wellys much cosier. I'd mark with tape and cut with a stanley knife

  • Don't bother buying wellie boot socks, they are too expensive, go to a discount sports shop and buy a cheap pair of football socks, that's what my boys wear all winter to keep their legs warm, as do I, they will fit fine inside your wellies, and can be found for £1.50-£2 a pair depending on your size (I go to Sports Direct)

  • could you not just try and fold/roll the tops over a bit? I've done this before when I had a pair that rubbed my shins, they were much more comfy after that just a wee bit shorter

Scissors work fine - if it's that they're too tight, I used to cut a V shape out of the centre back. Not as creative as those decorated pixie boots but does the job. Have also made ankle boots by cutting along the "contour" lines after our dog chewed the tops! A few years ago though I discovered neoprene ankle boots (R0bins0ns January sale) - waterproof and warmer than wellies although not much good in deep snow/water/mud when I have to borrow my son's yellow fisherman's wellies! And I find I need an extra loop of string/ribbon/cloth tape - there is a small tab already - to make it easier to pull them on.
