Revamping wellington boots

Some welly boots of mine are proving uncomfortable round the leg.

I think I could give them a new lease of life by cutting them down to welly ankleboots - but I'm no dressmaker..ahem..

So that I dont make a right pigs ear of trying to do this - any hints on how-to/what tool to best use for doing so/etc please?:)

I expect some moneysaving expert on here has done so before now with good results...

i would prob use a decent pair of scissors or a stanley knife to cut them

i dont think i would lop them at the ankle straight off, but take them down a bit at a time, until i find a comfortable length

maybe put a bit of masking tape around the boot, to give a guide on where to chop

Ah-ha - I like that idea of using masking tape to mark the cut.

Duh <slap head smilie> - why didnt I think of that?

Just goes to show - two (many) heads are better than one sometimes:)

Another way for making sure the cut meets up and is level is a dressmaking tip for shortening trousers - Find the level that you want the boots to be at the measure from there up to the top of the welly then measure that same distance down at intervals around the circumferance and mark it, join these marks up and cut along that line - this will make sure the top edge stays the same as original just lower.

If you are handy at knitting, once you have cut them you could knit a fancy rib and glue it to the in the inside and would stop the cut edge rubbing against your legs - just an idea!

    Errr...knitting.....ME:eek::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

'Fraid I'm absolutely useless at knitting. Thank you for the idea - but its not something I personally am going to be capable of doing....

Any other ideas on "softening" the edges welcome though...:)

I had a pair of thick walking socks that eventually went at the heels, so cut the socks just above the heels and put in my boots and fold the tops of them over the top of the wellies.

Cooking mama - I have seen wellyboot socks in our local 'factory shop' and also in some pou£d shops.

ceridwen - I always have to cut down my boots at work (we have specialist boots for cooking environments) I take mine to the engineers who use a stanley knife mark one side then cut through both sides at the same time. Thus, providing a balanced edge. Mine do however rub on my trousers and have caused bobbling (although these are office style trousers).
I would get a spare pair of socks and fold them over the top and cut a ring from the cuff ( just cut across socks so they stay in a ring and then glue it on. This would mean your tootsies would not be as open to the elements and if you used a pretty colour your wellys would be quite cute.

I got some welly boot "socks" at a shop called Yorkshire Trading in Ripon. They were about £10. Where are you in the country - you might find one near you. Alternatively, let me know and I'll search for some here. You can also get them (more expensive) from places like Scotts of Stow - maybe Lakeland - google welly boot socks.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

I like the idea of restyling wellies.
