No Wifi Connection?

hi,

i hope someone can help me as earlier this morning i had my broadband installed by a virgin media engineer for the 10meg option.

the problem i have is that i must use the ethenet cable to connect to the Internet, when i disconnect the cable it disconnects from the Internet not allowing me to surf the web using my built in wifi on my laptop.

the engineer was super this morning he tried a few different things all is ok on the virgin side, but my laptop wont connect using wifi atal. the virgin engineer said there was something wrong with my wifi settings but did not know.

i am using a msi cr700 laptop if any one can give me any help and advice about this problem, before i contact tech support. there is a wifi button on my laptop and is switched on.
they have given me a netgear vmdg280 wirelss modem router.

Does the router have the wifi setting on? Seems a silly question but it can be turned off in the settings.

  • Is there a wireless link showing in the bottom right corner if not and your using win xp click start, setting networks connections then check if the wireless link is enabled within the connections if not right click on it and press enable. If it is enabled try pressing repair and it should try and release and renew the link.

Alternativly you might want to check the router to see if it has any filtering etc setup that requires you to give access to the mac address of the laptop.

Does the WiFi on the laptop work if you take it somewhere else with WiFi? Alternatively, have you got another WiFi enabled device, such as a mobile phone, you can try on your home setting?
Might help to narrow down where the problem lies.

On Win 7 go to Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center (or View Network Status and Tasks if in the Category view), Manage Wireless Networks and see what it shows.

  • Have Virgin supplied you with the Netgear VMDG28 hub (combined modem+router)?

A lot of Virgin users seem to be having problems with this equipment and Virgin are not being very helpful. You might like to take a look at the threads about this hub on the VM Support Forums - here's one, but there are several threads on the same topic.

    Good luck!

  • One workaround that seems to have worked for a number of people is to go into the hub's admin pages and disable the firewall. You have to read a lot of threads to find that out!
