Floppy drive checked on startup

For no apparent reason, my PC has started checking the floppy drive when it boots up. It's only a small thing, but the 'chk chk' noise is beginning to annoy me. Any ideas why it's started doing this? Thanks.

change the boot order in the bios.

    I agree..
When you boot the PC.. as it checks the memory you need to hit "Esc" (or possibly F1 or F8 or Delete) trial and error normally gets it.

This takes you to the bios setup screen.

You are looking to change the boot order so it boots from CD and hard drive before the floppy.

Thanks for the advice, but I've already checked this, and it's set to boot from HD first. It actually checks the floppy about halfway through booting up from the HD
  • you probably got a reference to a:\ somewhere in the registry..

    try regscanner..

    to find it.

have you opened up any documents from floppies recently?

Have you checked the other BIOS settings apart from the drive boot order? Mine has a Boot Up Floppy Seek option as well as the boot order. Have a look for that in the BIOS and see if it's enabled.
  • IcyEars: Boot Up Floppy Seek is off.

albertross: Tried scanning the registry as you suggest.

Guess what, it's still checking the floppy on boot up.

    Any more ideas?

Is this about the time that your antivirus program starts up? They often check floppy drives for boot-sector viruses (are you old enough to remember them?!)...

Yes, sadly I am old enough :o . That's a good suggestion, but I don't *think* it's that as I've always had anti-virus software running (AVG), and it only started doing it a couple of days ago. I suppose the AVG settings could have changed...? I'll look into it, and thanks.
