    Thanks everyone for your help.

    Just to clarify, I did follow alienRik's advice first - the fact that the computer did connect with the Internet in order to download the update did give me a bit of a clue.

    Anyway I did run a Malware scan and a virus scan and both came up clean. Only once I did that did I consider something else.

    I spoke to my brother for advice and he recommended Firefox. Luckily there is 'Browser options' icon on my desktop which gave Firefox as one of the options. It also gave IE 8 as an option, which seems to suggest that I had got IE 7 (sounds about right).

    Anyway, things seem to be working well at the moment - and we can't get over the speed! So fingers crossed.

  • It might be worth using the NoScript addon for Firefox as an additional security measure. It takes a little bit of taking used too but I have used it for ages, and Rik would probably recommend it too. Get it here or search for it in Tools/Add-ons

    Fact is, much as I dislike IE, it doesnt just fail without a reason. So something somewhere was affecting it.
