How to find out which program uses a port?

Can anyone tell me how to delve into the PC and find out which programs are connected to which ports, specifically port 25 and not Outlook Express?

More below, but that's the nub of it.

I have been getting a problem with outgoing emails - they are not sent, and the error message says "... , Server: [...] , Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 relay not permitted', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

I've done a search for this error code on this forum and elsewhere, and it is sometimes a question of authentication or a secure connection to the server

Other times it's about people using a different ISP from the email address and needing to use a different relay.

I have the Onspeed accelerator program and spoke to them about this earleir and downloaded something, uninstalled and reinstalled, but it's the same.

What is happening is that Onspeed tells me that another program is using Port 25, possibly an anti-spam or anti-virus program, so it won't send. No sending with it off either or switched off for emails.

I don't have an anti-spam program and tried with the AV turned off for a few moments - still doesn't work, so I need to find out what is doing it ...

    or start, run, cmd

    netstat -oan

find the pid opening port 25, then

    tasklist | more

    to find the matching pid

there isn't any program on port 25

I've just stopped one, so maybe it was the right guess, but OE still not playing, so maybe I need to restart

Earlier, I inadvertently uninstalled some Windows components. I wanted to remove Windows Media Player but in the box I unticked everything except that and removed IE, OE, games, Fax etc

So I'm suspecting that although I'd looked through those only a couple of days ago, I've remembered the wrong options on reinstall, like IIS, TCP options whatever

I might list them later to ask for comparison, if this sounds plausible, but these two in the Task Manager make me wonder as they don't seem familiar in there
    inetinfo.exe - which I stopped
    tcpsvcs.exe - which is running

edit - aha, CurrPorts has inetinfo on 25, 80, 443 and a couple of others, as it didn't stop from the Task manager, so that could be my mistake

Ok, I'm removing IIS, which I hope was the problem, and back in a few minutes

Now I'll have these Windows components

    Accessories + Games
    Fax Services
    Internet Explorer
    Outlook Express
    Update Root Certificates
    Windows Media Player

and not IIS, MSN Explorer or any Networking Servoces

any comment, if anyone still reading?

I'll do that too - Antivir

you think I could have inetinfo? - that was on 25, so I thought I'd dump it

I think there's also a virus which uses the same name, which is why I suggested the AV scan, not expecting you to have iis..

Have you tried ticking the box 'My server requires authentication' in the OE account server settings? Also check that the POP3 and SMTP servers are correct.

Has it ever worked OK when Onspeed is running?

Thanks - on that ISP they said no authenication or secure connection on the Advanced page there

It's worked fine with Onspeed for two and a half years, with two ISPs

I'm now ok (I think) and I sent myself 3 emails between addresses

It seems like it was my prat's trick as above - installing IIS that I didn't need, and it clashed on the same port 25 as OE.

All because I meant to uninstall WMP temporarily and removed all the other optional Windows components instead by mistake, then guessed which to replace ......
