New laptop advice

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a new laptop as desktop is broke. Can anybody recomend a good one for around £450?

I need it to:

Last, i.e not break within a few years.
Have around 2.2 ghz
RAm of at least 3gb
Hard Drive of over 250gb
ideally HD, but not essential
and be wireless for internet.

I use it for:

Surfing net mostly
Microsoft Office
Making videos
and playing football manager.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated, especially about makes to avoid or to trust

Cheers

  • To be fair dude you can wipe '2.2ghz' off of your requirements list as that's pretty irrelevant. Processors aren't rated as easily by clock speed anymore (for e.g. I was using a 3.6Ghz Intel Pentium 4 EE and now I use a 2.6Ghz Core i7 - guess which one is quicker?).

If it was me personally for those tasks I'd grab this
    http://www.comet.co.uk/p/Laptops/buy-ASUS-X52F-EX486V-Laptop/676934

It's seriously quick for the price (core i3, decent memory/hdd and VERY well built).

Games will struggle on any laptop but as Football Manager is pretty low down on the intensiveness list it will be fine.

Catch is it was £399 so its upto you whether you can wait for it to go back down again or not. But as long as you grab a Core i3/i5 you should be good to go. Also 'HD' is irrelevent on laptops also as all with a decent chip will play back HD video but not many (unless you spend seriously money) will have a 1920x1080 screen.
  • Cheers for the reply fella, i will have a look at this one.

Also thanks for the info re processor speed.
  • No worries. Be careful though again and check the processor MODEL not just the name. We sell a 17" Core i3 laptop but it has the 330M (the original one) - the ASUS I listed has the 370M which is a bit quicker all round.

Don't let memory put you off much either, 2GB is still more than enough for most tasks and even a low end user could throw another stick in worst case scenario.
  • Hi Mark,
I purchased the asus one mentioned above from comet about two weeks ago, and can vouch for it so far its been great. Very pleased, nice and fast with the i3 processsor. And it looks really good aswell (if your bothered about that like). I paid £450 instore which is a good price for an i3 processor, think these laptops are around £600 rrp. Good luck with your search.
  • Thanks again,

I might find it difficult to get to a comet are any of these 2 any good?:

    TOSHIBA Satellite C660-108

    or

    PACKARD BELL EasyNote TM97-GN-030UK

    Both from PC world

Also sorry one more question where do i find out if they are 330m or 370m?

    Cheers
  • It should be in the specifications if it isn't go to the store and press windows key + r (same as start menu > run) and type 'dxdiag', click no on the message that pops up and it will give you detailed spec.
  • Nice one, do you have any views on the above 2?
