ATI Radeon HD 5600 Problems

A friend has asked me this question, its got me stumped. What about the guru's here?
I am running Windows 7 and have an ATI Radeon 5600 on my works PC. I am having no end of problems with errrors saying,
"AMD Driver Stopped Working and has recovered"
And loads of issues in my modelling software. The PC has 8Gb of RAM (think its !!!!! value RAM) so dunno where the issue is. Ive updated Windows, updated the display drivers.
One thing It maybe? I have an oldish HP L1706 Monitor plugged into the video card. Is that the issue?

Run driver cleaner after removing the old driver.
If its a fresh install of Windows then I'd recommend reformatting again to start fresh and use the correct Catalyst drivers0 -
