Ouch - Need help (think I have breastfeeding thrush)!

Options
I think I have thrush from breastfeeding and think my baby has it too. I have all the symptoms. I am off to see the doctor this afternoon but want to know what to ask for. I have read that Nystatin that is commonly given to treat it is a bit crap. Can anyone recommend something that really works that I can ask my doctor to prescribe for me? I have also been trying to source gentian violet which is supposed to be fantastic but can't find it anywhere. Thanks.

Hi Confused, when madam and I had thrush, we got nystatin first (rubbish) and then we got Daktarin for Sophie. I got Clotrimazole. It is a bit faffy trying to get the stuff in bubs mouth, but it worked a lot better than the liquid, which she just puked up anyway.

Agree with Bexta. My wife used Clotrimazole too...

Take this to your GP as it is current advice and alot of GP's might not be aware. It can be quite difficult to shift, so persevere.

Good Luck and well done on the BF.

Been there and you have my sympathy:(

If it is thrush and you have it then the best thing to take is fluconazole (we tried all the creams etc and they never worked) plus you will need to treat baby aswell I think I used nystatin which was ok but daktarin was better.

Oh and wash your bras on 60 degrees in the wash and try and avoid eating alot of sweet things. There was also a herbal treatment that I took called acidophilus but this was all a combined attack because I had it constantly! In the end I had to avoid all sugar and yeast combined with the above which made it worse to begin with (which was because I was starving it!) and then after 2 weeks I was free of it!:T

I feel your pain, been there done that with both babies :-( but almost as soon as you start the treatment it starts to feel better - cream for you, drops for bub and the next feed should be a lot easier! Hope it goes well !
  • take the given medication, tablet for you and cream for the little'un.

Make sure you are eating the best possible diet - thrush feeds on sugars. So avoid all sugar in your diet, inc fruit and juices. Also processed sugars, ie, pre made sauces (dolmio etc), cake, biscuits and white bread, for a week or so to make sure it has a difficult time.

Hopefully you'll both be feeling better soon! X

Be sure it is thrush. My telephone diagnosed 'thrush' with specialist breastfeeding councillors turned out to be a huge abscess...

What Bexta said. I've had it three times (so far) and that stuff gets rid of it but the stuff I had at first was rubbish.

You can also eliminate yeast and sugar from your diet as the thrush feeds on those apparently.

It should go in a few days with the right treatment, so whatever you use, if it doesn;t go, then go back to your doctor.

I feel for you as the pain is awful, but use the cream and it will ease off very quickly. :)
