Refund after flight cancellation because of weather

Hi everybody
Our flight from Gatwick yesterday was cancelled because of the closure of the airport due to the adverse weather conditions. The airline's next flight is on Sunday, which isn't suitable, so we've gone home and we'll be seeking a refund.
The travel agency, Major Travel, is saying this could take up to 8 weeks to arrive! This appears to contradict the AUC advice that "you are entitled to a refund, within seven days, of the parts of the tickets not used".
When I pointed this out to them, I was treated to some waffle about "different channels" because it was booked through a travel agency.
I smell BS here - what are the rules?

The reality is that the tickets will have to be put in for a refund, assuming the airline agreed to give you one yesterday. All agents pay and receive refunds through a direct debit system called BSP, it operates on the 17th of each month, so a refund request will go in on December 17th and they should get a refund in the next round on 17th January. It isn't BS, its the way the airlines work and don't assume that booking direct would be any better!0
