travel to Grassington Xmas Market

My partner & I have a hotel booking for saturday night at the Wellington Hotel Harrogate with the intention of visiting Grassington for the Xmas Market.

Can anyone local advise whether it is sensible to travel by car in that area bearing in mind the currently reported weather/ road conditions

Many thanks

Harrogate is fine, I am here at the moment after doing 50 miles from Goole.

The roads are generally clear and gritted, even the minor country roads I used to get to the office are clear.

  • Forecast is for it to clear by the weekend, for what it's worth! I'm driving from Darlington to Leeds and back tomorrow, will report back then if you like - I go past Harrogate. Thre problem I've found isn't so much the roads, it's a small proportion of the people on them who don't have a clue.

grassington is nowhere near harrogate or even leeds, it is right in the yorkshire dales, I would strongly suspect it to be very very snowy there with nowhere near the gritting of a major town like harrogate

this is the weather forcast for grassington and it says it is snowing there now

Edit but going to harrogate should be perfectly fine esp if you stay on the main roads, it's just making your way to grassington will likely be more difficult.

The A59 from Harrogate to Bolton Abbey can be "interesting" even in normal times especially the bit after Blubberhouses which is up a narow winding road with a sheer drop followed by several miles of very exposed road, then you have a trip up the narrow B6160.

Personally I think you are nuts to consider this - and I lived in the area for several years.

    Go to York market instead

If you do come to Harrogate there is a Christmas Show in the Conference Centre

  • Hi, I live on the edge of the North Yorks Moors and once you get off the main A roads travelling can be very difficult. We have 11" of snow in our garden and more is falling as I type this. Conditions can vary massively from one area to the next and from hour to hour. I personally wouldnt try to get to Grassington but I would think that Harrogate would be fine over the weekend.

As others have said, the A59 Harrogate - Skipton road is always interesting, especially around the Blubberhouses area, so take care there. In general terms though, the road from Bolton Abbey through to Grassington is OK if driven carefully. I don't know about now, but the farmers always used to ensure the roads were passable so that milk tankers and the like could make the journey.

The weather forecast for the weekend is meant to improve, but ultimately only you will know how comfortable you are driving in these conditions in that area.
