How to organise everything in my life OS?

  • My tips would be:-

Set reminders on your phone for bills, appointments, etc

I clean 2 rooms a night as I work full time and by doing this I relax at the weekend.

I iron as it comes out of the dryer/washing line.

I put a load of washing in every morning and night.

I batch cook once a month.

I shop once a month for meat and on a Tuesday and Friday lunchtime for milk/veg etc.

I tidy/hoover/make beds before going to work.

My slow cooker is a Godsend for the days we don't eat the batch cooked meals!

I make sure the car is filled with petrol on a Sunday - that way I never lose time int he morning going to the garage so I have extra time to do jobs around the house before work.

I do packed lunches the night before straight after dinner. That way left overs are used up and I know the kids lunches are ready to go. I have been known to make up sandwiches and freeze them a few weeks in advance in individual bags. By the time you take them out the freezer in the morning their defrosted by lunchtime for eating.

I make sure no dishes are lying around before bed and I get up to a tidy kitchen.

Put bleach down the loos at night and wipe round sinks. Dong a bit each day makes such a difference.

Do things as they need done. It's easier to do this than let it all pile up.

  • Just thought of another simple thing that saves time... I have 2 laundry baskets, one for colours and one for whites. It makes it so quick and easy to just grab a load and stick it in without having to tip it out and sort through it all x

Oh yes I do this too, plus one for a hot wash so it's easy to see what you've got and what needs doing first.

  • Sazdaz I know exactly what you mean but when it comes to myself I just can't seem to get a grip! Loads of inspiring ideas thanks to everyone, I love the idea about the notebook and I will be doing that one, I would like to start batch cooking and freezing as I have a chest freezer that I can use and that would really help and save money too.

The zip bags for toys is another great idea as with the little one we are constantly finding bits and bobs everywhere. Putting bills in a diary is a good idea as I am always late paying them! Has anyone got any recommendations on good apps for the iphone for organisation?

I certainly think a household notebook thing is in order as someone recommended but I think this Dodo Household Stuff Book is for that or I am hoping so.

I am going to do one wash and hang them up on the clothes airer and I am going to do one wash for the tumble dryer even just the simple list of what to wash on each day that Seabright has kindly posted has helped I am going to follow this method.

I have been thinking as well I need to sit down and plan my time more as I really should be working set hours and having time for housework as with working from home its hard to switch off from it.

I currently just keep opening post then putting it in a pile here there and everywhere then I forget the bill was due or to deal with the letter and I end up when I do tidy up putting it all in a bag and shoving it into the spare cupboard what does everyone do with their household paperwork and what system do they use as this is one of the things I get really overwhelmed with and although its a really good idea someone has said but I dont currently have a filing cabinet.
  • I feel that I have that many things going around in my head and things to remember and do that it I find it hard to channel it and get one thing done I try to do several and get nowhere I think this is the actual problem and seperating work, home, mum, wife, cleaner does anybody else feel like that or is it just me??

I really want to change it for the better this year and feel good and have time to concentrate on what I need to at that time and have an organised home.
  • with the post we do the one touch rule.... we open it, read it and then either file it or bin it in the recycling. We have to be strict with this as once upon a time we had piles of paperwork in every room on every surface and it got beyond a joke

  • kellyjrs, love the one touch rule I am going to try that. I empty my dishwasher every morning while my possidge is cooking, can you believe it takes less than three mintues to do. The seperate bank accounts is also a great idea.

    thankyou for all the tips

Cynthia Ewer... she may be American and a little OTT but a lot of her books (cut the clutter is good) and her website have great info and tips. Organizedhome.com I think. But it is important to get a system/routine that works for YOUR household, not just lift one verbatim from a book as then it's more likely to stick.

A basic four week menu plan and a master shopping list helps too. Several years ago I wrote down almost evrything I'm likely to buy at the supermarket ( written in order items appear round the store). I keep this on the computer and just run off a copy and highlight anything I actually need to buy. This is probably my only really organised habit - and it really keeps me focused at the shops!

Genius! I am definitely starting this...

  • Get the children involved and start teaching them good habbits now. I don,t know how old they are but they are never too young me youngest is 2 ad knows were to put her dirty washing, her dirty plates and any rubbish. It's amazing hw much time can be made for you if the you are not running picking up after the kids.
