Claiming back charges from 2-3 years ago.

I was with Natwest and managed to accrue a about £300 of charges, £38 a time. I basically had gone travelling and think I got charged for drawing out money in Australia. The charge sent me overdrawn and it was a downward spiral from there, charges on charges etc.

I was 'kicked out' of Natwest because I was in financial hardship and couldnt afford to pay them back. So I've had to go with another bank since. The charges have been paid off now because they were passed to a debt collecter who eventually, and embarassingly, come knocking on my door.

Is it still possible to claim back charges even though it was a couple of years ago and I no longer bank with them?

You need to prove current financial hardship at the moment, and where an account is closed, it cannot be causing further hardship. Hardship claims that banks are agreeing at the moment typically end up with you haveing the last 6 months of charges removed to date.
Not only this, but you must prove you are in hardship. I suggest that if you still wish to proceed you read the hardship resources sticky at the top of this subforum.

Your definition of financial hardship is probably not the same as the official one. Going travelling to Australia is not something that someone in financial hardship does.

You dont appear to have been in a spiral of charges and you make no metion of priority debts.

. I basically had gone travelling and think I got charged for drawing out money in Australia.

Just about all banks charge for taking out money overseas - and it's not a charge that is open to challenge.
  • I didn't know about the charges until I got back from travelling. I went overdrawn by a few pounds. I basically withdrew the very last of my wages from the account, and the £4 they charged me, I went overdrawn by about £2, it was just unlucky really.
I was abroad for 9 months and found out about all these charges when I got back, and when I got back obviously I didnt have a job or anything I would have considered having no job as financial hardship but I could be wrong as you said my definition of it could be different from theirs.
