    Thanks Backfoot.

The fault is the same as yours, an underground cable, we have now been told. The expected time for re connection is now 8pm.

Party time _party_:grouphug: You'll need some help getting rid of all that food. Is there any smoked salmon? :D

nah, but quite a few pork joints that I daren't use now as the freezers have been on and off for the first day. Quite a few curries and pizzas though. I'd have been more fed up had I done any christmas food shopping!!! And I'd need a decent heater for a party, it's bloody freezing and 2 feet of snow here!!!

if as you say `it is bloody freezing` and you have been sensible enough not to open your freezer, then the contents will be perfectly ok

Thanks. I haven't opened them at all, will everything really be ok after 2.5 days? That would be great.

What is the damage to the linkstation?

A supply interruption of itself wouldn't normally cause damage to computer equipment. How have you tested it, without the power being on? As I said,if the fault conditions on the cable caused a voltage problem,it could be damaged.

If it is the latter ,then you have no obligation to claim on insurance. You will probably have an excess to a similar value, anyway.

In our case, Eon were very good in dealing with the problems. It's one thing having a power cut which we all expect and live with but not damage to our household appliances.

Your car breaks down more often than you get power cuts,
who do you sue? Sure it's inconvenient and annoying: my builder lets me down constantly, but I'm not going to sue him.

People don't realise how much money and effort is required to achieve high availability. You need backup systems for backup systems. I worked on a database with a designed 99.98% availability, which means we are allowed to be unavailable for service for two hours in a whole year. It meant we kept 5 duplicate systems at £1 million pound each running constantly, when one system can just about handle peak load. In case of terrorist attack, earthquake and other scenarios, two systems were located in a different country! Each system is actually a pair of computers in a resilient configuration, so that if one breaks down the other one instantly takes over. The upgrade procedure can only be exercised on one system at a time, in case a LIVE system crashes.

Put simply, it's like having ten cars lying around to make sure you have a car that works, and four of them are in a re-inforced underground bunker in case of armed attack.

If I thought the food in my freezer was important, I would have a backup generator and a tank of fuel for it. I would love to see who has food that's worth more than a generator. You don't have a generator because you don't think your food is worth much. You are just annoyed because it's incovenient, and you want to take it out on somebody.

. If I lived in a country where they are lucky to have an electricity supply and expected constant power failures I would have a generator, as we had in Bulgaria.

So the cost of your generator was due to an interrupted grid supply. Did you get annoyed with the Bulgarians for not supplying you electricity 100% of the time, and demand they reimburse you for your generator and diesel costs, in addition to your pork joints? Care to tell us how much you got from the Bulgarian supply industry?

Better still, simply bury the stuff in a snowdrift.

The damage to the linkstation is that it has gone into EM mode. I have been informed that I can possibly retrieve the hd in it by reflashing it but it isn't guaranteed. This was determined after the first 5 hours of no power, then it was resumed for 30 minutes. since then it has been off most of the time with intermittent power for 5-20 minutes followed by hours of no power.

I now nil about this item of equipment but it doesn't sound to me like you have had a power surge. If you had there is the likelihood that other sensitive electrical equipment would have been damaged.

Googling EM mode gives some solutions which sound similar to your description. I can only wish you best of luck !

As you have sufferred a loss of supply, you may be entitled to payment under any of Regulations 5,6 or 7 of the Guaranteed Standards of the Distribution Companies. This will depend on the circumstances ,weather related or not, number of customers affected and the length of time you were off supply.

Certainly worth enquiring about compensation for the loss of supply. think its £50 for the first 18 hours and then some more for (i think every 12 hours after that)
