Yes - looks like I was wrong and they have two different output voltages - probably not enough space to parallel another complete set.

The lower than expected capacity is probably due to the fact that they use the same charger - and hence the same charging voltage - whichever battery pack is used. This would mean that each cell would experience a lower voltage when being charged. A side-effect is that the 8-cell pack will ~probably~ have a longer total life, as it should get less hot when charging.

I have opened it up and it turns out that there are three sets of two parallel connected cells, all connected in series. There are also wires to the battery's circuitry from the ends of each of the sets of cells. I presume that this is for charging and monitoring the pairs of cells whilst charging.

So it would appear that I can go ahead and buy a 14.8V battery.

Oh, btw, the DC power in is 19V, which is probably necessary to charge the higher voltage battery. If it had been designed to only take a 11.1V battery, then perhaps the DC in would have been lower, maybe 15V.

I found a number of sites selling 14.8V batteries, from 33.99 including delivery.

I was concerned about the fact that the manufacturer was unknown.

2-Power is a PSA Parts brand which I've heard of before. The cheapest place I found to buy its battery was on PSA Parts' own website at £62.50 inc VAT.

I came across Misco which also sells these, but at £73.99 inc VAT plus delivery. However, they had one where the box had been opened which I've now ordered for £21.18 including VAT and delivery.

I bought the Misco battery (the one with the 2-Power one in the open box). It took just over a week to come via City Link, although it was during the spell of bad weather.

    Works well.
