Is there a program for cataloging?

I have a huge collection of antique books and I want to find a program so I can keep a catalogue of them on my computer. Ideally I would like to be able to list title, author, publisher, date of publication, where/when I bought it and what I paid. Could anyone please recommend a program that I could use for this please?

  • You could use MS Access/Excel to create a database/Spreadsheet containing all these or the open office alternative.

Any spreadsheet or database program can do that for you.

Is it easy to do, and will I be able to search by any field? Sorry but I don't use computers for work - purely for surfing/shopping online!

If you already have MS Office then you can try out what you want to do in Excel-or download OpenOffice for free and use the spreadsheet in that.

This sounds like a fantastic A-Level ICT project.

Get in touch with your local school and they will build you one for free to your exact specifications!!

You might have to wait 12 months though :-(

There's bound to be a ready-made template for this ..

Search for Office Templates and you will find loads of sites!
  • On a spreadsheet it quite simple to do, just use the A column for your titles (list title, author, publisher, date of publication,where/when I bought it and what I paid) then list below them the relevant parts. To search then you just use ctrl+f on excel as the simplest method.

I use a record collector database by FNP Programvare called CATraxx which is excellent.
They also produce a book database called BookCAT. The evaluation version is free to try out but limited to about 100 entries I think.
