Painful Dentures.

Hope someone can give me some advice before my dental appointment tomorrow.
I got a top denture a fortnight ago. I did expect some pain & in some ways it's been more akward than sore. Yet, it seems to have gotten more painful this last week & I looked at my gums by rolling my top lip back. I appear to be able to see bone in three seperate places as if the denture has rubbed away all the skin through to bone. I'm not sure - but it looks really gross.

I am due back at the dentists tomorrow - weather permitting - to get some front bottom teeth out and a a partial bottom denture.

Will I ever be able to eat anything other than slop? Should I ask for a delay on getting my bottom denture until I've got the top sorted & painfree?

You probably should of gone back for adjustments to be made if your denture is rubbing so badly.. I think you'll find its just rubbed skin rather than bone.. It might be better if you get the top ones adjusted and settled before having more work done.. I'm sure one of the more knowledgable members will be along with advice ... it does get better with dentures but they do need adjusting

Yes - I probably should of gone back but I just thought it was because of the extractions, was pain that was to be expected IYSWIM.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
  • You should have gone back, as said above it's almost certainly not bone (although it could be and because we can't see you, we can't say for certain) and you are right to give the denture a good chance (like a new pair of shoes). By now any swelling etc from the extractions should have gone down and a simple "ease" could do the world of good.

If you are going back anyway, you must mention it then and hopefully get it sorted. I would quite happily adjust a top denture and fit a lower one at the same appointment (doing one on Friday) but your dentist may not, either way you should get it sorted. Good luck!

BTW, not many people have "front bottom" teeth, it sounds a bit oo er missus IYSWIM, perhaps lower front teeth may sound less well, err, personal!!!

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: It took a few seconds but i got there.

Seriously OP, go back and have your dentures adjusted. I had all my top teeth out in May and had to go back 3 times and did end up comfortable enough to eat properly.
After extractions the gums change dramatically because obviously there are no teeth there, but really there is no need for such pain.
I had a big white blister above where my two front teeth had been, the dentist adjusted the dentures, I had to leave them out for 24 hours but the relief after then at putting the dentues in and being able to eat bread (no crusty crusts mind) was just tremendous.
Ask to postpone your other treatment till you get this lot sorted.
It can take anything up to 3 or 4 months for your gums to settle around the dentures.

    Good luck

Thanks - As I've never had this done before - obviously - I didn't realise that it was rubbing & just not everything settling down - so to speak.

    Thanks for replying.
I will mention it tommorrow. I don't feel I'll ever be able to eat anything other than yoghurt ever again.
I would rather be a bit comfier than now before having more teeth out but I'll be guided by him - not easy with the weather & the distance - i have 40 miles to get there - probably be better getting it all done at once.

See what you mean about the 'front bottom teeth' - weak laugh on my part - not feeeling too jolly at the moment.

Thanks McKneff - Poor you having them all out at once - this has been staged - I've been going for regular extractions until all I had left was 6 upper & still got ten lower.

Poor you having it done at once. My lower front teeth are pretty loose - the four that are due out tomorrow.

Just don't know how I'll ever be able to crunch anything ever again.
