Sold house, nowhere to go...monthly rental?

I have recently sold my house, and the buyers are looking to move in early in the new year. Our vendors pulld out of the sale, and at this time of year we have struggled to find something suitable to move to,

I am really pleased to have sold, however due to the time of year, and the fact that there isn't anything great to buy, I think my only option is to rent somewhere.

Basically, we are a family of four, with two young children. No pets, non-smokers.

Having never rented before, is there any chance I will find something to rent on a month to month basis? Where can properties like this can be found?

If month to month isn't possible, can three month lets be agreed?

There is a market for everything, but the shorter the term, the more it will cost: hotel - B&B - holiday cottage - 6-month rental ..

I think for a family 3month will be harder to find. You are looking at 6month minimum for private rental.

There's nothing to stop a landlord giving you a 3 month let, but it's unlikely unless either he's desperate as the property's been empty a while and/or he charges you a premium.

Reason is that by law he can't tell you to leave within 6 months whatever the contract says (though YOU can leave after 3). So most LLs give a min of 6 month contracts.

But it never does any harm to ask.
  • How about moving in with family? We have just that for exactly the same reasons, sold house (twice this year but could not find anything we liked due to lack of supply), all rentals seemed to be minimum 6 month rental. Have moved in with parents whilst waiting for a suitable house. Not ideal but a short term solution and cheaper. We have also crammed all our possessions into friends and family houses as storage costs were awfull. It would have cost us £200 per month plus. Like you we are a family of four and did not want to lose our buyers. Obviously depends if you have family close by?
Why did I not have the LBM years ago?
LBM Dec 2008 -Debt total then £18,802.24.
    August 2010 - Student Loan £5526.
Loan £5642 -£3000 saved towards final payment:)
    Balance Outstanding £8168.
  • A six month let wouldn't necessarily be a problem as once christmas is over, it will take time to find somewhere and for all the legal work etc to happen, it may take 6 months anyway...

Especially in the current housing market.

We do have family close by, but none of them currently have room for all of us.

I'm also struggling to find private landlords, so it looks like I will have to take a six month rental out with one of the agencies on rightmove.

Ask every agent around and see if any of them have a landlord that's prepared to take you on on that basis, there might be one - and there only needs to be one.

From January you could look at getting a holiday let until the Easter season starts.
  • Whereabouts in the country are you? If you are in a holiday area you might be able to find a winter let (holiday accommodation that's let out much more cheaply during the off-season). I've done this myself before (SW England) and I rented it on a week-by-week basis.

Compare properties for sale/rent. There are more and more that up for sale AND rent. Whilst I deplore this (when T told property is long term rent). LL may be more likely to negotiate as obviously their ultimate goal is to sell but want a short-term rent out of it to cover their mortgage.

    Good luck :)

When I thank a post in a thread I've not posted in,
