Virgin Train 1st class ticket sale

I could not find this anywhere so hope it is useful. I received an e-mail from Virgin offering 1st class tickets in December. I managed to get a 1st class return from Liverpool to London for only £50.00 which I consider a great bargain. It is a real treat going 1st class and the normal cost is huge especially during the Christmas holidays.

When are you actually travelling. I have had a look on Virgin and can't find anything for the price you have quoted.

I am travelling to London Christmas Eve and coming back on the 29th. £25.00 each way. I always visit the 1st class lounges at Euston [there are 2] for free drinks [coffee, tea etc.] and nibbles, comfy seats. They are usually quiet and much more relaxing than being in the busy concourse. Not forgetting the food, drinks and newspaper provided on the journey included in the ticket price.

  • There is now only one First Class Lounge at Euston, above the food court. The previous Lounge next to the ticket office is being converted into a Sainsbury's, I believe.

Some bargains to be had in the sale, particularly the £35 one way London to Glasgow First Class fare on peak trains such as the 07:30 and 08:30 out of Euston!

Am I correct in thinking you can only use first class lounges with a full fare 1st class ticket, not with advanced. I seem to remember enquiring about this at a station a while ago and was told this.

Edit: According to the Virgin website you can use their lounge with advanced tickets. It's East Coast who want you to pay extra if you have an advanced ticket. Thinking about it, it was Edinburgh I was travelling from.

I've used the 1st class lounge at Liverpool St, with an advance ticket. But it seemed not to matter, there was noone checking people's tickets anyway.
