Standard Charge - is this normal?

I am contemplating changing my energy supplier from E.On Age UK to EDF Online Saver 7.

I have just looked at pricing for the EDF Online saver 7 and noticed that they have a "Fixed Daily Charge"

Is this the norm? I am just digging out my current E.ON pricing and I can't see any reference to a "Fixed Daily Charge"

Well, obviously you wouldn't want to pay that when you can get a tariff that has no standing charge. :rotfl:

It's like BT line rental, you end up paying for it one way or another.

    That's what I thought,

I have just checked and I am not paying a Fixed Daily charge on my E.On Age UK Tariff.

So I have done a quick comparison of what I am paying now and what I would be paying if I changed:

    Eon Age UK

    Electricity Fixed Daily Charge NO

Day First 900 (kwh) 14.57p (Inc Vat)
    Next KwH 15.37p (Inc Vat)

    Night 6.11p (Inc Vat)

    Gas Fixed Daily Charge NO

    First 2680(kwh) 6.274p (Inc Vat)
    Next KwH 3.248p (Inc Vat)

    EDF Online Saver 7

    Electricity Fixed Daily Charge 24.75p

    DAY 11.79p (Inc Vat)

    Night 4.77p (Inc Vat)

    Gas Fixed Daily Charge 25.29p

    First 2680(kwh) 6.274p (Inc Vat)
    Next KwH 3.248p (Inc Vat)

Looks like E.On is the best deal compared to that particular EDF Tariff

You have Gas AND Economy 7?

If it's available in your area, check out E.On Age UK Higher User.
Usage must be above the kWhs they list, but you pay less per kWh.
So you might want to use more gas to save money. Crazy, I know.

    Your current daily charge is the difference between your first and second tier units so (6.274 - 3.248) * 2680 / 365 = 22.218p per day for gas . Elect figures you quote are not right !! so I assume (15.37 - 14.57) * 900 / 365 = 1.97p per day.

Put your annual kWh consumption into one of the comparison sites and see what it comes up with. Comparing direct unit rates rarely works.

I think they are. The Economy 7 unit rates on Age UK are very bizare as the primary rate is cheaper than the secondary rate!!

Not in my area, 0.23p dearer for first tier, 0.567p daily. My difference is 13.34p = 32.9p daily charge.

Hi Pdog - As Pincher has quiried. You have an ECO7 DAY/NIGHT rate meter and Gas ? !

If your gas supplies only cooking this is fair enough, but if it does the Heating & Hot water you have the wrong meter
ECO7 meters are usually installed when the house is built - It's cheaper for the builder than installing gas even though it's available in the area - but it does produce expensive bills, particularly for Daytime power, which is why house owners where gas is available go to the expense of installing Gas Heating & Hot water.

With the gas installed the householder then informs the Electricity supplier, who do one of 2 things:
    1) They change the ECO7 meter for a Standard meter.
    2) They add DAY/NIGHT ECO meter readings together and charge them at Standard meter rate.

The problem with (2) is that it's just a 'Note' on the account and at the time of a change of house owner or a Switch, the 'Note' gets lost and the supplier reverts to ECO7 billing.

If you do indeed have full Gas central heating & Hot water, advise your supplier today.
