ok, so HJT won't work properly on the 64-bit OS. But, what about a compromise? Why not replace one of the (assumed) 1GB sticks with one 2Gig to give 3Gig overall. Probably not much difference to 4gig performance-wise, but half the cost :)

On a more serious note, will you actually see much of a difference with 4GB over 2?

I was thinking the same - I run loads of simultaneous apps on my main PC, including about 30 tabs open in Firefox, and I've never seen it use more than ~750MB, despite having 2GB available.

I'm led to believe that Vista was particularly bad in its use of RAM, but for most other OS, I doubt you'll see any noticeable difference unless you're doing something exceptionally memory-intensive.
  • I plan to do just that. But I was hoping someone would find something cheaper than £24 before I ordered.

Running 3DS Max and Maya takes its toll. It's definitely slow, and it uses a lot of the ram.

There was nothing wrong with the way Vista used RAM. The problem is the muppets who said it used loads but didn't bother to find out why and spouted their "findings" as gospel which got Vista a bad rep. Vista actually benchmarks on par with Windows 7 which people are claiming is a storming success. The reason Vista used more is because it pre-loaded frequently used apps in unused RAM for faster startup, unloading them if the RAM was needed - that's what the Superfetch service does. Disable Superfetch and you had loads of RAM free - a bit pointless if you're not using it - you say you have over 1GB just sat there idling most of the time for example. Superfetch was such a good idea that someone wrote the pre-fetch package for Linux which does the same thing.

    Anyway...
2x2GB will run faster than a single DIMM or two different sized ones (2GB+1GB for example) as two same sized DIMMS will run in dual channel mode which increases throughput by up to 80%.

I wouldn't expect a great increase in speed as 3DS max and Maya are basically mathematics applications so rely more on the arithmetic unit on your processor.

Odds are it will do nothing as its likely your cpu is at 100% when rendering.

I know from experience that ram modules work best in pairs.

    I know.

Also, does anyone know where I can get a pair for a cheaper price?
