Norwich Union Direct Quote me happy

In Nov 2003 I took out car insurance with Norwich union for a year, I paid by instalments by direct debit.
Last October I get a new quote for the car from Norwich union only this time in insurance has jumped by be a hefty £80 from £130.
I used the web site confused.com which I been since 2003 and got the same quote from same insurance company only this time it was £130 plus £25 new customer, big difference from £210 and I got 4 years no claims.
So I thought I take out this policy instead hoping I get the £25 cashback as a new customer, which I did a few weeks later.
Just started doing on-line banking (late start for me despite being on Internet for about 10 years)
Went through a list of direct debited and noticed a payment to Norwich Union Direct for £14.66 and 3 subsequent payments up to Dec 2004.
I thought that was strange as I paid this time by credit card in full.
I rang last night to see or rather confirm what was going on as I was almost certain I paid in full. I manage to speak to a Indian lady quite well spoken (makes a change) and it turned out that I had two policy running for the same vehicle together, and that a refund would be given.
I just wondered why they hadn't picked up on this before, I have had insurance with other companies but I never needed to cancel one when it was finished within the 12 months.
I had to ring them up again this morning (this time it was very hard work trying to communicate with a chap) just wanted to confirm as I forgot to ask when I get the refund and how it will be made. I get the hard sell about car recovery (got that already from another company) I try to explain to him that I MAY be interested in July when the other one runs out BUT, only if its competitive.
I have to check on-line banking more often in case anything like this happens again.

Insurance companies normally send out the renewal letter saying something to the effect of "to renew your insurance you need do nothing", i.e. your insurance will continue by default unless you explicitly cancel it.
Just industry standard practice, although annoying for you!0
