Please could someone tell me would "Windows" ever phone direct to say there is a virus on my computer?
I have now received 2 calls the 1st supposedly from Windows UK saying the junk mail files are infected. The 2nd call said they were Windows Support Group and it is the "management section" that is infected. Both callers had very strong foreign accents and it was very difficult to understand them and I think both calls came from abroad as when I dialed 1471 the message said they did not have the caller's number etc.
When I said I could not go onto the computer at that time both callers gave me a number to ring for customer care but they are totally different numbers and don't seem to have enough digits and I don't like to ring them in case they they are premium numbers.
I would normally just ignore these calls but a few weeks ago I opened an attachment that had a virus. The E-mail was supposedly from someone I know who would never knowingly have sent such a thing.
I would appreciate any advice you can give.
Many thanks,
Sunny Girl

It's a scam - many similar reports of unsolicited phone calls, playing on potential customers' computer naivete, if you search these forums.0

As their is no such company as Windows in this respect alarm bells should ring . Its Microsoft they do not phone you nor email you unless you have contacted them . jje0

Your computer has told them you've got a virus and given them your phone number. Then out of the goodness of their hearts, Microsoft have decided to get one of their overseas call centres to tell you about the problem.;)
String them along for a bit if you want to entertain yourself, just don't give them any information they don't already have and certainly don't call any numbers they give you. Just tell them to wait a moment while you boot your computer and lay the phone down while you do something else. Don't suppose they'll hang on for long, but while they are it stops them bugging somebody else.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Totally agree with the rest.
Without any shadow of doubt its a Scammer.
If you can get any info off them when they call again that you could pass onto the authorities then do so. Most likely they will just give loads of false contact details0 -
