I've just closed my First Direct account, and found that as soon as you start having problems or indicating you are planning to close your account they take a different approach to Customer Service. Each time I spoke to them they'd present me with another hurdle I had to clear before I could close the account, and although I stressed I wasn't happy being drip-fed with what I needed to do to close the account, each call revealed a new challenge / constraint / issue.

I finally managed to close my account today, even if it meant losing 8 months of interest on an account as I was so desparate to break free.

I feel a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders - and am so much happier with my Lloyds Vantage Accounts.

Out of interest what sort of hurdles are you referring to?
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I think FD is brilliant. I've had no problems with them in 8 years and they've been an absolute godsend in dippy moments - such as when I set up the same largeish payment twice (by mistake) they called me to check it out and saved me from going overdrawn.

Also, their free text service is v.useful. I've set up texts for when my balance goes below a certain amount which I receive first thing in the morning and if a payment has taken me over my limit (stupid on my part, I know) I can rectify it the same day without recrimination. And they're pretty spot on when I'm managing my money well, too!

Paying off overdrafts? Closing other accounts? I think that's what he means about losing 8 months interest.
You've never seen me, but I've been here all along - watching and learning...
