what happens when...

flights are cancelled?

we are due to fly from gatwick next week on a package holiday, however if it stays like this and the flight is cancelled what happens, do we wait for the next flight, do we get a refund, do we lose our money? I have been on hol lots of times before but never had to worry about anything like this.

we are with thomas cook, i did try caling to find out but obviously they are inundated with other callers.

we have 11 days for the snow to go so not worrying too much yet.

also what happens if the flights are runnning but we cant get to irport because of no trains/roads blocked ect ect.

we are on a package hol, insurance was bought with holiday if that makes a difference, thanks all

They'll try and get you on holiday but your holiday maybe shorter.

You'll have to claim from the insurance if an insurable event prevents you getting to the airport.

If you have a proper package holiday, single price for a whole package involving flights and accommodation then TC will look after you. They will feed you and provide accommodation if necessary. You should check your insurance to make sure it covers losses caused by being unable to get to the airport due to breakdown of public transport, many offer up to £300 to buy another flight if you miss your originally booked flight. Of course, if the weather is that bad the flight will be delayed anyway. Today is exceptional in that the airport is making no effort to clear the runway because they have a forecast of a severe storm this afternoon, normally airports close for a few hours for runway clearance, so do not assume the worst!
  • thanks for the replies, we have a complete package, everything paid in one, at travel agents. I will pop in there as I am going to change up some money in town, so just thought I would ask on here in meantime. hopefully the worst of it will be done with by the time we fly which is 12 dec.
I will go through what the insurance covers and prepare loads more time to get to airport. we are taking a taxi, but trains may be a better idea, however I will asess this nearer the time.

Unfortunately the onus is on you to get to the airport no matter what, depending on why you didn't get to the airport on time depends on whether the insurance will pay out. If its a Thomas Cook package with charter flights then these are just usually delayed and you should get on holiday but later than expected, although if they're not sure when they'll actually be able to fly you, for example when the ash cloud struck they may cancel and then you have a choice all your money back and rebook something else or just your money back. I do know 2 of the Thomas Cook flights due out of gatwick today were moved to other airports ie the Fuerteventura flight the people were bussed up to Birmingham so that they could get on holiday with Gatwick being closed.
