No luck - it said could not validate your account.

Details are definitely correct so something odd is going on.

you say the card is not used very often

Has the card been cancelled due to lack of use ?

I wonder how the card was used (albeit not very often) perhaps for online / telephone transactions which do not require the PIN

Have you checked that the card still works , by making an online transaction (charity donation etc) http://www.bbc.co.uk/charityappeals/

or https://www.rbssecure.co.uk/rbs/registration/welcome.jsp?partner=rbs.consumer.credit to see if the card is still valid

Not that we are aware of. When speaking to RBS card services yesterday in an attempt to get a new PIN, nobody said it had been cancelled.

Presumably they knew the PIN last time it was used.

    No

How far through that do I need to go? It accepted the card number ok.

I would be surprised if RBS divulged any information about the status of the account without the password

    It requires the following

    Account Number: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
    Expiry Date: (MM/YY) /
Last Three Digits of Signature Panel Code:
    Name Embossed on card:

    Primary Cardholder's Mother's Maiden Name:
Primary Cardholder Date of Birth: (DD/MM/YYYY)

    It's Royal Bank of Scotland.

I've just gone through the sign up procedure for online access with them. Personal accounts are fine but it says credit card account number doesn't match their records! Even more confusing.

Now that you have registered for online banking (current accounts) presumably you will have specified a password to use with telephone banking (current accounts) they may be able to add the credit card to your current account online banking or find out the nature of the problem

Once that is fixed you can register for credit card online banking and order a new PIN , or just order a new PIN in writing - which will not require disclosure of your password

The default password for RBS credit cards seems to be mothers maiden name

    True.

I didn't want to go through all of that if it wasn't necessary.

It certainly asked for a password which is now set up. It also said that details of the credit card account would be added within 7 days. Perhaps I just need to wait and see for a bit.

My father sent off a letter yesterday requesting a new PIN. I am just wondering if that has something to do with all this bother now. However I would have thought it would still have verified all of the details of the card.

That would have been one of the first that was tried. He was told it wasn't that. It also asks for password/mother's maiden name when registering - mothers' maiden name was used.
  • Have you tried using the automated service when you call in? There is an option on there to have a PIN reminder sent. Pot luck as to the verification questions but should be ok if you know mother's maiden name and details from the card
