My Mum helps to look after an elderly lady who is in need of a new washing machine. It needs to be easy to use and reliable and not too expensive (in that order of importance). Any suggestions?

Something from the Bosch range might suit, maybe a Classixx model. They are reliable and mid priced, the easy to use is more difficult to judge!
I see they also do a smaller load one, that might be good for someone living on their own.

for an idea on prices. The full size machine seems to be cheaper! The small one is about £3600 -
Coop Electrical have this for £312

We have a Hotpoint Model 960D. It's standard external size but has a slightly larger capacity than normal which is useful as it will take a standard size duvet. It also spins at 1600 which is faster than average so removes more water and clothes dry more quickly. (Useful if there's a possible incontinence problem).
Also, it has a lit-up digital display which tells you which washing or spinning selection you have chosen, so if eyesight is not good it's easy to see. It also shows the time the washing cycle will take and how much longer it's got to go before it finishes.0 -
no particular recommendation, but it might be worth looking for one you can 'set and forget' iyswim.
let's face it, there's usually 1 program you use 99% of the time. mine has two dials: one sets the program, the other the spin speed. I rarely change either. IMO this is better than one where you have to choose for each wash what you want to do to it.
also higher spin speeds may not be so good: if mine is set at more than 1000 rpm it is horrifically noisy and the whole room shakes!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I bought a Beko last year, after checking on Pricerunner final price was £147. Not the highest spin, but seems easy for me to use (Age 75). Has a 30degree wash . Cold fill. Got it from Comet (via Quidco), delivered, would have fitted it for me and they took away packaging. A survey form came later, did Tom and Jerry the delivery guys do a proper job etc
