Radiators on or off?

Can anyone advise the most cost effective course of action with gas fired central heating, we have no thermostat, just thermostats on all the radiators. Should we turn off the ones in rooms we don't use?
Also is it better to keep the heating on all the time or turn it on and off?? Am worried about the bills :(

Turn off radiators in rooms you don't use.

The longer you have heating off - the more money you save.

However it is always a compromise between comfort and economy, don't let the latter dominate.

    Good morning:

Have a programmable roomstat fit to your system....more from the Energy Saving Trust.

If the radiators have a frost setting turn them down to that in the rooms you don't use.
As Cardew says, the longer the heating is off, the less it costs. In tests I have done, it cost more (although not a lot more) to have the house on a low temperature setting all day than off and the heating timed to come on early morning and for the evening.
Plus you'd really need a thermostat (preferably programmable) for the whole house to look into leaving it on low, unless you want to run around turning your radiators down when you leave and up when you return.

Fit a room stat or preferably a proper programmer-they're not that expensive. You'll get your money back soon (and a vastly more useful CH system).
