My son's PS 3 has given up the ghost. First the blu ray player went and then the whole gaming system.

Sony have offered a replacement /exchange for £131. Can we do better?

  • How old is it, i assume it's over a year and that's why they want to charge you, i'd speak to trading standards to get a good understanding of the sale of goods act, then call Sony again, explain the situation in a calm but firm manner and ask to speak to someone higher up if the first person won't help, the lad who works with me got his PS3 replaced free of charge last year by doing this, he'd also been told he'd need to pay. His was one the original unit's and he'd paid about £350 for it. Failing bluray players are a common fault especially with the earlier units, however goods should still be expected to last for a reasonable time, say around 4-5 years.

Hi my brother had an original ps3 about 2 1/2 yrs old.His had yellow ring of death. It was purchased from Gamestation so he contacted them in the first instance. The console was sent away for a repair free of charge twice, but because it had the same problem twice in a short period of time, he had to return it to an address given by Gamestation, and he was sent vouchers to purchase a replacement (£199 to cover the cost of a refurb one) so i would contact point of purchase first. He did have his receipt. Good luck hope you get sorted.
This has been recent only received his vouchers couple of weeks ago.

I doubt it. You can't even get them second hand for that.

It was one of the first PS3 on the market. He bought it from a local shop, which now does not trade anymore. I guess its done quite well, but to totally fail.... Perhaps we will try Sony again and see if we can beat them down...

  • Wouldn't try and bargain, your position should be that you as one of the first buyers you paid almost twice the price that they are currently retailing at, it was sold as a premium item and as such it should be expected to last a reasonable amount of time. Your console if it's an early model would have more usb ports and the added advantage of playing PS2 games, a feature removed from later versions to reduce manufacturing costs, allowing Sony to reduce the sale price to better compete with Microsoft. In your shoes i would expect them to exchange it for a refurbed unit free of charge.
