Can I ask your advice on this one please? I'm hoping to join... but do you all have separate bank accounts to put this money in?

Any ideas?! And is it easy?!

Eeek! This Money saving thing is daunting.... but exciting!

I am the same as e4rub I have an account that takes a few days to transfer over from and it does stop me from just dipping into it.

  • My savings are in a piggy bank. But I put it on the highest shelf,
Put my change in it then put it back up and forget about it.
Half the time i forget it's up there until i have money to put in it.
I don't really get any temptation to use the money because i think about
what practical things i can use it for. :D

I have just opened up an online savings account with coventry building society - as mentioned in Martins weekly e-mail this week. It is operated online only. You transfer money from your nominated bank account and need just £1 to open your account.

You can apply on line, then return the signed agreement to them (which you can opt to have posted to you or print out on your own printer). Once that is sorted they send you your account details and info on how to set up your online password etc to manage your account and you are away.

It allows you to have 4 penalty free withdrawals a year - but of course I will only be needed 1 !! ;) So hopefully that will be set up within the next week and I am all set to start in December.

I decided to get one totally separate from my bank account so that I cannot instantly transfer money and I not tempted to borrow from it. Plus, I almost want to "forget" what the running total is and hopefully have a nice surprise at the end of the year. My husbands wages are being cut left right and centre, so this will really help us out next Christmas. Plus - am excited about doing it!!
  • Well done BlueCow!
I've just received my letter from Coventry.
HOwever, I have decided to stick with an account with my current bank though as I intend to put the money in a new ISA in April and it's only 0.15% lower interest. Can't wait to start filling/trying to fill it!
  • A bit late for me this week, but put 6.53 across to my virtual sealed pot.
Now it's time to start planning for next year already!!
