Painting a woodstained door

Hi, I am looking to paint over a couple of woodstained doors with white gloss. Ive read up a bit on how to do this and it seems to be that I need to sand the door, apply a primer (oil based best?) and then the gloss paint. My question is how much sanding do i need to do? Is it just a quick once over or do i need to strip the door right back?

You need to sand it to give the stain a key, so it doesn't need to be sanded right back to bare wood. You then need to clean it down with white spirit to make sure all the dust from sanding is off the door, otherwise the painted finish will end up looking like sandpaper. You will then need to apply at least 2 (but maybe more) coats of an oil based undercoat. If it is a dark stain, more coats will be required. Then just one coat of good quality gloss/eggshell/satinwood.
